I recently discovered this new EQ plugin by Eventide. You know, Eventide...!
Well, I must admit I'm amazed by SplitEQ so far... it allows you to separately control the EQ of transients and tonal bodies. There's a bunch of 'how to' videos on Youtube, and it's application areas seem endless.
This EQ is quickly going to find it's way into my standard setup.

]]><![CDATA[Tribe 1988-1997 songs remastering]]>Tue, 10 Aug 2021 18:58:03 GMThttps://www.rothelevenproductions.com/blog/tribe-1988-1997-songs-remasteringAs a founding member of Tribe, a Belgian indie rock band active in the period 1988 - 1998, I always felt a missing streaming presence. So I got hold of the tracks and remastered them for digital streaming platforms. Our album 'Temper' was not hard to do, because of the already excellent mastering by Staf Verbeeck. But the older work was a bit of a challenge, trying to get the same quality as Temper. The ripped stereo wav files was the only thing I had to work with. I used Izotope's Ozone (version 8) to do the mastering. Our label B-Track did the publishing.

Tribe played in a lot of youth clubs at the time, and on small and larger stages, such as Leuven's Marktrock. Our single 'Saturation' even made it to national TV, in a show called 'De Zevende Dag', and had a 7 week presence in De Afrekening in 1998.

I learned almost everything I know about music production from this wonderful magazine:  the Computer Music Magazine. CM Magazine in short.
Did you ever find yourself in the situation where you wanted to re-read this great house track builder tutorial they had last year, but you couldn't remember what issue it was in? I certainly did...

So, to pay my respect to the CM team, and as a late Xmas 2017 gift to them, I created a table of contents of all issues starting from the Jan 2014 issues. I only included the tutorials and interviews, not the commercial messages or the 'what's new' sections.

I realized that the Maschine is just another VST instrument with 16 MIDI channels - one sound on each channel. The best way to proceed is therefore as follows:
  1. Create a Maschine Rack instrument
  2. Enable all audio outputs of the Maschine rack instrument
  3. In Maschine, create 1 group. This group has 16 sound slots. Add sounds to the slots, either in Kit mode or Sounds per slot. Adding other groups does not make sense, since you are not going to be able to switch Groups from Cubase. If you need another Group, just create another Maschine rack instrument instance.
  4. Put the Group MIDI settings as follows: MIDI enable, root note = C3
  5. Set the Sound MIDI settings for each Sound in the Group as follows: source=host, MIDI channel = channel of your Cubase MIDI track, MIDI thru = off
  6. In Cubase, create up to 16 MIDI tracks, and send them to the Mashine instrument

1. Create a Rack Instrument, and select Maschine
2. add MIDI tracks, and route their output to Maschine

3. In Maschine, right-click on the group and select 'sounds to MIDI notes'

4. Set the Group MIDI input as shown below (important: set Root Note to C3):

5. Select all Sounds in the Group (ctrl-A) and put the MIDI input setting as shown below:

6. Set the Sound MIDI output settings as follows:

And you are done. The only disadvantage I could not get rid off, is that recording only works when CLICKING the record button in Cubase. When using the keyboard command ('*' in my case), the Maschine also goes in Record mode, leading to double recording both in Cubase and in Maschine. If anyone out there knows how to fix this - pls let me know by replying to this post.

Having a comfortable creation environment that is to your liking is key in my experience. So yes I invest quite a lot in my home studio. More upgrades will be coming soon, but for now I particularly like the 3 screen setup. I use Cubase 8.5, where the leftmost screen has the channel mixer, the middle screen the project view for arranging, and the rightmost screen shows the Media Bay - this is where the sounds come from. And for creating new stuff, I often use the Maschine MkII. The home studio is acoustically treated with Gypsound gyproc against walls and ceiling, and double acoustic glass in windows.

The Flemish pop-rock band Wolix released their first full album 'Tijdzone' a couple of weeks ago. The album features a song for the late Luc De Vos. Tijdzone was produced by Roth Eleven Productions.

From the press article (full article) - in Dutch:
Muzikanten Stijn en Dries Willockx, Gerd De Coensel, Karl Heyman en Davy De Wolf slaagden er in om met 'Tijdzone' een indrukwekkende en gevarieerde cd ineen te steken met de gebruikelijke combinatie van alledaagse teksten en originele melodieën in de stijl van Gorki. "'Mensenvriend', de eerste song van onze elf nummers tellende cd, is een ode aan Luc De Vos", verklappen de muzikanten die zaterdagavond hun cd voorstellen tijdens de tweede editie van 'Neanderthalers' van vzw TiniTiaTief in Lede. Tijdens hun vijfjarig bestaan liet Wolix zich overigens ook al opmerken met 'Fileleed', de soundtrack voor de kortfilm Traffic Jam van Herzelenaar Piet Sonck en er was met 'Alles is krom' in 2002 ook al een EP.

As the producer of this song and the Quartier Nord album 'New World', I remember having spent quite some time on the 'saturated instruments' and the 'brilliant vocal harmonies'.

Producer Francis Depuydt at Roth Eleven Productions finished two tracks for the Belgian artist 'Niko Jane'. The mission was to take the tracks, that had been recorded quite some time ago, to another level by inserting some electronic elements - gently and delicately.
